Resume Preparation: A Gigantic “Plumbing” Project

January 30, 2014

We all understand a Plumbing Project. This where a supposedly
simple task become a massive, complex effort.

One of the common “Plumbing Projects” in today’s environment
is the preparation of a resume.

Each resume must be customized to the target audience. This
effort usually takes several hours to complete.

Resumes are always needed:  Job searches, contracts, professional
network, and volunteering activities.

The resume effort is made more complex due to the need to paste
it into a web-site window, discovered usually at the last moment.

I have been using my Programmable Software Development Environment
to maintain its manual. Its use has greatly simplified this task.

WHATIFWE used the Programmable Software Development Environment
to develop resumes?  Would it help?  Yes it does!

Life of A Programmer — Session 3 — But You Have a Challenging Software Engineering Job.

January 30, 2014

Let me present to you the long term history on employee / employer relations.

I joined the Lockheed California Company in 1961.

At this time, there was a strong loyalty between employers and employees.

Employees were expected to stay with their employer for their entire career.

Employers were expected to keep their employees for their entire careers.

Job Seekers with more than several employers on their resume were not favourably considered.

important people in any civilized society.

Nothing of any value gets done without the participation
of these highly skilled professional.

WHATIFWE increased the number of highly skilled home-based
pioneering professional software engineers?

Life of A Programmer — Session 3 — But You Have a Challenging Software Engineering Job.

January 28, 2014

You have a challenging job with a great software engineering company.

You have a software engineering degree from an excellent university.

Financially, you are upper-middle class.

You have a nice house in a upper-class neighborhood.

Your feel that your future is certain.

I beg to disagree.  If you can accurately predict the future, you are in the wrong business.

Software “Breaks”!

January 27, 2014

A 17 year old sailor on a submarine must be able to
fix a critical piece of electronic equipment within
15 minutes.

Critical submarine hardware has the required subsystems
to facilitate the location of a failed replaceable components.

Most hardware these days has at least one computer within it.
This includes critical submarine systems.

Can the same 17 year old sailor on a submarine find and
correct a critical software failure within 15 minutes?

Does software “break”?  Not really. but software fails when
it illegally or incorrectly writes some data.

Programmers have many ways of preventing illegal writes which
they use in checkout and then remove before delivery.

WHATIFWE used formal illegal write prevention code in delivered
software?

Life of A Programmer — Session 2 — But You Have a BS Degree in Software Engineering

January 27, 2014

A College Education does not qualify you to be truly a “software engineer”?!

Your degree was granted to you when you successfully completed a set of classes.

Each class is basically a reward / punishment training process.

You satisfy the instructor, you get a good grade.

For all intents in purposes, you cannot become more skilled than the instructor.

To do so usually means that you are not using the techniques that he is teaching.

Disagreeing with the instructor usually does not result in good grades.

Open Source Software Development Tool: Upgrade Progress

January 27, 2014

The overall purpose of the current Programmable Software Development Environment upgrade process is to certify that a product generated is certifiably releasable.

Major improvement have been made from the 1) Implementation of the experimental, alpha, beta, and release versions of a software parts library and 2) the ability to detect whether the product text files have modified manually (patched).

To certify a software parts library, every command defining this library must be executed. This includes all error detection and reporting statements.  These error statements not only include those associated with the user but also those that detect and report programming and Programmable Software Development Environment errors.

Ideally, those _ERROR statements that report programming and Programmable Software Development Environment errors will never be executed. Therefore, they currently can not be included in the certification test sequence. The challenge is to provide a set of commands which will be executed during a test sequence and report a specified programming or Programmable Software Development Environment failure should it occur.

The following two commands need to be developed: 1) _CONTINUE_IF which will error out if the preceeding test condition is false and 2) _CONTINUE_IF_NOT which will error out if the preceeding test condition is true. These statements replace the currently used _JUMP_IF and _JUMP_IF_NOT statements.

SUNDAY: 2014/01/26

STATUS: The update of the Programmable Software Development Environment has been completed and tested in both the Win32 and Linux environments.

DETAIL: The _CONTINUE_IF, and _CONTINUE_IF_NOT have been implemented in the in the global, precmac, precoper source files, compiled and tested. I am now using the resultant Windows and Linux executables.

NEXT TASK: The next task will be to update the manual to include these commands..

The Role of the Media

January 26, 2014

Both the incompetent and the competent benefit from
media attention.

The competent leader requires community participation.
The media helps him to obtain the participants.

The incompetent needs 15 minutes of fame. The media
helps him to satisfy his greedy goals.

Unfortunately the entertainment associated with the
incompetent attracts a lot of media attention.

The competent pioneer finds new solutions to current
problems.

WHATIFWE were to provide the media attention needed
to develop hope from the new ideas of the competent
pioneers?

Life of A Programmer — Session 2 — But You Have a BS Degree in Software Engineering

January 26, 2014

Are you a truly a software engineer or are you just “doing it”?

You have a BS degree in IT and graduated with a A- grade point average.

Your academic performance is very important to your career.

It helped you to get employment with a great company.

It prepared you to do some important software engineering tasks.

Unfortunately, It does not qualify you to be truly a “software engineer”.
