The Computer Wisdom of Bugs Bunny

Do you remember the Bug’s Bunny cartoon where he pops out of the ground
in the middle of the desert and says “I think that I should have turned
left at Albuquerque”?

Mistakes always happen; some because of stupidity, some because of greed;
some because the required knowledge was not available, and some because
we are just human beings.

We are currently experiencing a great many security problems due to
hackers.

The basic computer design that makes this possible has a common program
and data buss. Hackers can cause their program to be loaded on the target
machine via this common buss.

In the late 1970’s, there was a different computer design, the Harvard
Architecture with separate data and program busses. This architecture
cannot be hacked.

About 1985, the microprocessor became practical and the Harvard
Architecture became obsolete.

“Did we turn right at Albuquerque in error”? I believe so. Could we
have avoided it? I think not. We could not have predict the future.

Should we re-vitalize the Harvard Architecture? I think the benefits
would greatly out-weigh the costs.

HAS A MAJOR ERROR FREE SOFTWARE APPLICATION BEEN DEVELOPED?

When was the last time that a computer error created a real
problem for you?

An ATM failure occurred when I was transferring $1000. It took
the bank 5 hours to find it.

Have you heard that the development of error-free software was
economically unachievable?

Would you believe it if I told you that a major error-free
application was developed in 1968.

IBM developed the PL/1 compiler in 1968. It was error-free.
Unlike Fortran, it had no bug list.

How did IBM do it? They developed it in strict compliance
with the principles of simple-precedence.

WHATIFWE developed other applications in strict compliance
with principles of simple-precedence? Can we do it?

The Purpose of My Blog

The original purpose of my blog was to provide me an easy
means of reporting my activity on my personally funded
research and development activities on error-free software
development methods.

I subsequently expanded the purpose of my blog to encourage
others to improve their skills by conducting their own
regular experimental process.

I became a software engineer in 1966 due to an experiment
that I had performed. I have never taken a course in
Software Engineering. You are encouraged to take a similar

I am the only one managing the blog and hence
have a limited amount of time to do so.

If there are less than 100 comments, I will examine
each comment to determine whether I will approve it
or delete it.

If there are more than 100 comments, I will examine
and approve comments according the following rules:

For each group of twenty comments, I will:
1. Find the first one that I can approve.
2. Approve the selected comment.
3. Delete the remaining 19 comments.

The Most Important People In Our Society.

Who are the most important people in civilized society?

Are wealthy individuals the most important people in our
society? No, they are not.

Are celebrities the most important people in our society?
No, they are not.

Do religious organizations contain the most important
people in our society? No, they do not.

Are government officials the most important people in our
society? No, they are not.

The artisans and highly skilled professionals are the most
important people in any civilized society.

Nothing of any value gets done without the participation
of these highly skilled professional.

WHATIFWE increased the number of highly skilled home-based
pioneering professional software engineers?

Disaster Seminar 22 — Concluding Remarks

The preparation for a Disaster sounds like
a lot of work!

It isn’t as much as you think.

Keep in mind that a disaster will occur.

All computers eventually break.

When this happens, you will appreciate

How Do I Make My Blog

There have been quite a few requests for advice on
“how to build a blog”. As you can see from my blog, I have
prepared a lot of posts. Therefore, I have learned how
to do it efficiently.

There are some simple rules for making your blog easy
to prepare.

1. Have a well-defined purpose for your blog. For myself,
my blog was a means of publicly documenting my research and
development efforts.

2. Use a standard format. Then you can build a template
which will greatly facilitate its preparation. I use
my development software to write the blog.

3. Don’t get carried away with an artistic design. I use
the free WordPress. I do not use any pictures; all I
have to do is paste in the text. Above all, I did not
have to develop the blog web-site.

Above all, recognize that every post you publish will be
in the public domain forever. I have been very careful
to put just enough information to identify and date my
efforts but not to give away any proprietary data.

I became a software engineer in 1966 due to an experiment
that I had performed. I have never taken a course in
Software Engineering. Over the years, I have continued
to experiment on my own time and have greatly benefited
from this activity

In 1992, I became a home based software development business.
I developed a set of tools to aid me in my business activities.
These tools evolved over time and are now capable of helping
a software engineer to become a better, more competitive programmer.

“COMMON CLASS ARITHMETIC” LIBRARY

The functional development  and testing of the commonclassarithmetic
library has been completed in the windows environment.  Minor
modifications to the commonclassfloat library were required.

Portability challenges are necessay.  To make it totally portable
with the apple environment will require changing the tab setting
of the Windows and Linux environments from two to eight.

There are also problems in the Linux text editor.  A means of making
it a strict ANSI text editor or replacing it must be found.
 

Software Engineers are Quality Assurance Managers

Have you ever noticed that Quality Assurance, ISO-9001,
and the Deming Cycle is taught only in Business Administration?

I have found that when Quality Assurance was taught in Engineering
Schools, it was in Engineering Management Classes.

Is Quality Assurance just an Engineering Management Problem? Is
a Software Engineer a Quality Assurance Manager?

Computer Programs are special Deming Plans to be Done at the
client’s site by a computer not by a human being.

Software Engineers are, in reality, Quality Assurance Managers.
For the most part, they do not realize this fact.

WHATIFWE taught Quality Assurance, ISO-9001, and the Deming
Cycle to all Engineers in our Engineering Schools?
