Developing a Website using a software parts library

January 30, 2015

The activity associated with development of a software parts library
for the development of a web-site will be presented here. This will be
an extension of the library used to prepare Programmable Software
Development Environment manual.

This effort was started a long time ago following the development of
the manual software parts library. Its purpose was to eliminate the
need for Front Page. It was subsequently put on hold so that other
more important efforts could proceed.

Mr. Mike is a long time professional friend of mine who has recently
offered to reconstruct my Web-Site. I told him my plan to use my tool
to rebuild my site. He has had difficulties relating to my technology
(It is quite different than normal programming methods) and I am not
really skilled in Web-site design. We both felt that this might a great
opportunity to make the technical connection.

THURSDAY: 2015/01/29

STATUS: The CSS Output software test task has been modified and the CSS
Output Library has been thoroughly tested.

RESULTS: The execution speed of the resultant CSS Output Library has
been greatly improved.

MY NEXT TASK: The next step is to make the needed modifications to CSS
Software Parts and make the necessary functional tests.

STATUS: The cause of the referenced error statement has been discovered
and a tentative solution has been found.

MR_MIKE_CONTRIBUTION:

DETAIL: When I upgraded the Programmable Software Development
Environment for the four versions (Experimental, Alpha, Beta, and
Release versions}, I did not consider the Include file. I was not
using these files at that time. The Include file is functional in the
Experimental version.

RESULTS: The slowness of the script software parts library has created
serious questions regarding the proper operation of the Programmable
Software Development Environment. The CSS Output software parts library
needs to be modified to prepare a visual output file generation
progress report.

NEXT TASK: The next task will be to make the needed modifications to
the CSS Output software parts library.

FRIDAY: 2014/10/17

STATUS: Again as always, a battle-plan becomes obsolete with the firing of the first shot. The running of the CSS development task is quite slow; too slow to do a comprehensive test sequence with the test task.

DETAIL: As was reported earlier, I determined the primary reason for the slow speed was the use of the script system to reorder the preparation of the CSS files. I also determined that I was not using the scripts optimally. I made the modifications needed to improve its efficiency and now the development speed of the CSS files, although still slow, is acceptable. It will not be acceptable for a comprehensive test program in which all of the possible error conditions are properly tested.

RESULTS: The only easy way that I know to solve this process is to convert CSS Software parts library containing a large collection of software parts to a collection of small software parts libraries, each of which performs a limited function that can be quickly tested.

NEXT TASK: My first small software parts library that I plan to prepare will define and write the font families. You will recall that I recently made an improvement in this sub-function. A few more minor modifications and this sub-function will become a standalone library that will be accessed by the CSS Software parts library and comprehensively testable.

FRIDAY: 2014/10/10

STATUS: As always, a battle-plan becomes obsolete with the firing of
the first shot. Building the sub-task that contains the names and
addresses of all of the HTML pages is not the next task. Header formats
need to be defined in CSS file. I selected some appropriate software
part names and found that I probably needed to update the software
parts for both the font family and color definitions.

DETAIL: Two font families were defined; one by the user for the
web-site body and the other, a generic font family, for the printed
version and the headers in both the screen and print CSS files.
Currently, I see no reason for creating a third font-family.

RESULTS: Easy access to the generic font family data will be needed in
the header software parts. To this end, I added two software parts, one
for the specified font and the other for the generic font, to write a
CSS font family statement into a specified file. These two software
parts have been prepared, integrated into the existing software parts
and successfully tested.

NEXT TASK: The next task will be to prepare an equivalent upgrade for
the color software parts.

STATUS: The development and functional tests of the Horizontal Group section parts have been completed.

DETAIL: Four software parts were developed: 1) _WEBSITE_HTML_LEFT_BEGIN, 2) _WEBSITE_HTML_LEFT_END, 3) _WEBSITE_HTML_RIGHT_BEGIN, and 4) _WEBSITE_HTML_RIGHT_END. Functional tests were performed for all combinations of the Print/NoPrint states.

NEXT TASK: The following three sets of software parts are needed to complete this project: 1) Headers, 2) Text Lines and paragraphs, and 3) Table of contents. I will be examining the Header software parts requirement next

MONDAY: 2014/09/22

STATUS: The development and preliminary tests of the Horizontal Group section parts have been completed.

MR_MIKE_CONTRIBUTION:

DETAIL: Four software parts were developed: 1) _WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_LEFT 2) _WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_WIDTH , 3) _WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_RIGHT, and 4) _WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_END. Preliminary test were performed for all combinations of the Print/NoPrint states.

RESULTS: The CSS Files have been examined and appear to be correct. The actual behavior of these files can only be verified with the corresponding HTML files.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to start preparing the associated HTML software parts.

STATUS: The preparation of the Horizontal Group section CSS capability has been begun.

DETAIL: The Print/No Print software parts required major modifications. Specifically, 1) the capability of setting a Print/No Print state for more than one Section at a time, 2) communicating data from an earlier specification to a later specification, and 3) writing a Print File line for a NoPrint state are required.

RESULTS: The required modifications of Print/No Print software parts have been made. The modifications have been function tested with the existing WholePage and vertical Group section parts.

MY NEXT TASK: The development of the Horizontal Group section parts will be started.

MONDAY: 2014/09/01

STATUS: I started my horizontal group section CSS software parts
development process by making a plan.

DETAIL: I examined the existing group section software parts to find a
starting point. I was hoping that the new capability could be made
with a minor update of the original group section parts. Of particular
importance was the Print/No Print feature. Specifically, the Print/No
Print specification for either horizontal section group affects the CSS
code generated for the other one.

RESULTS: Three new software parts are needed: 1)
_WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_GROUP_LEFT 2) _WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_GROUP_CONT
(Interface between the Left and Right Group section), and
_WEBSITE_STYLE_HORIZ_GROUP_RIGHT. The existing software part
_WEBSITE_STYLE_GROUP_END can be modified to terminate the Horizontal
group section sequence.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to start the preparation process.

STATUS: The modifications to the existing software parts and the two
new software parts needed to make the center of the group the default
position for an image have been functionally tested.

DETAIL: Functional testing is not equivalent to thorough testing. I am
using the the test project to accomplish this task. This will permit
me to thoroughly the software parts library at a later time.

NEXT TASK: I plan to start the development of the software parts needed
to have two horizontal group sections. I still need to test the
software parts that define the borders; however, I do not need them for
the current web-site application.

STATUS: The CSS software parts for using a picture as the background for a specified section have been modified to include the capability of placing the picture at the center of the specified section have been modified. Two new software parts were prepared.

DETAIL: In my original design, I made the top-left corner the default position of the picture. I modified the existing routines to make the center the default position and build two new software parts to specified the top and left position.

MY NEXT TASK: My next task will be to functionally test these modifications.
